Season 1: Ep 1 - The LIttle Shuttle That Could?

Mylena Yee

She turned to Minato, her tone soft and soothing. "Are you sure you want to come dirtside at all?  It's not required you know. You don't have to hike through the jungle and stare down bail jumpers, Jax and I can handle things at the entrance just fine." She nodded reassuringly, though she'd never personally seen Jax in action.  In truth, she trusted Travis and Luke to have her back on the ground and having Jax there was just a little extra back up. In truth though, she'd give anything to have Becker there beside her, but sometimes things were what they were and you couldn't cry over spilled milk. "Did you find more information about them that will help us?" She picked up the cards that Travis set down, studying each for a moment before setting them back down. "Anything you found could help, no matter how small." She gave him an encouraging smile.

She shook her head slightly at Newt but she couldn't help but smile as she slipped her hand into his. She knew he was a bit over-protective but he'd never actually crash the ship. "No need for that I'm sure, my darling.  Things might not go smoothly but they won't go sideways. We can handle this. Heck Luke can probably handle half of them by himself and I'm sure Chao-san only invited us to tag-a-long to give us something to do." She gave their own giant a little wink.

She hadn't really met Dizzy yet but she gave the woman a warm smile.  It would be nice having another woman aboard.
Pale death visits with impartial foot, the cottages of the poor and the castles of the rich.

Luke OMalley

Luke kept quiet for this discussion of plans. His part was rather simple and he felt more than comfortable in his ability to do what Travis needed him to do. Instead his finished pocketing his weapons then rested his arms on his knees, watching the rest of their new crew quietly. His face was thoughtful as he watched, taking extra time to observe the two newest folk. So far they seemed solid enough people.

Jax

Once everyone was accounted for Jax closed up Ruby Rose, didn't need any stray dogs wandering up the ramp. He joined everyone in the crew lounge as Chao went over the plan again. "Seems like a solid strategy, but I would plan on things going sideways....been my experience they often do." Jax then glanced over to Dizzy and then Newt...."And they'll be no using my boat as a wrecking ball Mister Declan, I'm not carrying enough insurance."

Travis Chao

Mylena, "No need for that I'm sure, my darling.  Things might not go smoothly but they won't go sideways. We can handle this. Heck Luke can probably handle half of them by himself and I'm sure Chao-san only invited us to tag-a-long to give us something to do." She gave their own giant a little wink.

Travis smiled at the young woman's comments. She had a way about her of keeping the glue to the pieces of their little group.
"Quite right miss. Idle hands and the devils work or some such."

After Jax made his point, "Yes. Good point Jax. If things go bad, don't hesitate to defend yourself and each other. And if things go quite bad, we'll pull back and figure something else."

He looked around, "Better we all see through the next day unharmed than getting hurt and getting the job done."

Location: Greenleaf Skyplex Docks

The crew went about their preparations as Newt and Dizzy readied Ruby Rose to depart Greenleaf's Skyplex. With a bit of research, Minato gathered additional information that would help prepare the team for handling their intended prey. Wanted for skipping town while out on bond for charges of grand larceny after his gang attempted a robbery on Kerry in the Georgia system, Earnest "Lucky" Dalton earned his nickname not for avoiding registered Alliance Marshalls but rather for his reputation as a card shark. Related Cortex chatter ran contrary, however, as "Lucky" had a notable history of being barred from casinos for cheating. Gus Pickett, a reported coward known for shaky hands, sweaty palms, and an itchy trigger finger, had been elevated to the level of Earnest's right hand man by process of elimination as the rest of the gang remained behind bars or buried in the dirt.

Montgomery Quinn, Winston Townshend, and Belinda Bates were all originally from various points within the Core Planets and often conspired together to defraud folks of their hard-earned credits in order to maintain their lavish lifestyles. Montgomery, one of a quartet of siblings suspected of having connections to various criminal ventures throughout the Core, made a reputation for himself as a smooth operator - known for a quick wit rivaled only by his draw. He was never one for initiating violence, however. The same could not be said of his associates. Belinda, presumed to be a romantic interest of Montgomery's, would often act as a ringer or grifter in his schemes. She herself was not known for her restraint, proving herself more often than not as quick to anger and all too happy to make use of needle-point hairpins, a sharpened nail file, a broken bottle or glass, or even her own nails and teeth in a fight. Though much more reserved than Belinda, Winston was a revered pugilist holding many amateur records on a number of Core worlds. While not one to start a fight without cause, Winston was always eager to prove himself and was guilty of participating in, and even audibly enjoying, the occasional bout of unsanctioned fisticuffs. The trio most recently faced charges for forging, making sale of, and distributing fraudulent deeds to unrecognized plots of land on the recently terraformed Core planet Rubicon.

And that left Da Zheng, an absolute mountain of a man with a rap sheet of charges almost as big as himself, whose reputation for starting (and finishing) pier six brawls most recently left him charged with destruction to public property, disturbing the peace, and attempt to incite a riot. Minato made the rest of the team aware of these characteristics as Declan piloted the shuttle away from the Skyplex and down to the lush, green, jungle planet below.

Location: The Jungles of Greenleaf
To say that the foliage was thick on Greenleaf was to say that oceans were damp. The lush jungles of Greenleaf's considerable tropic belt yielded a variety of plants that could be processed into life-saving compounds that proved too unstable to synthesize in laboratory conditions. The whole planet was a hot bed for black market drug smugglers, an issue the Alliance was all too familiar with. Smugglers who knew the jungle well enough were known to set up various operations deep within, and entrepreneurs capable of operating within a moral vacuum were known to profit off the activity by establishing trading posts to take advantage of the Alliance's strictly imposed landing policies to corner the market on vital supplies, and offering room and board for folks that found themselves in need of it. Thanks to Minato's work, the crew learned the approximate location of one such trading post rumored to be particularly discreet in regards to puttin' a roof over them that took to hidin' from the law.

Newt sailed as smoothly as Ruby would let him, bringing her just close enough to the surface that for a brief moment those that were paying attention to the proper instruments could make out a small circle in the jungle where just enough of the brush had been cleared to make way for an establishment of some sort. Due to the building's wide, thatched roof covered in fresh green palm leaves and vines, however, the exact nature of the place remained a bit of a wild guess. The setting Red Sun washed out the rest of the color in the jungle, leaving most everything a shade of ruddy brown.

While Dizzy and Newt stayed with the spirited shuttle according to the plan, Luke and Travis made their way ahead of the others under cover of darkness. They moved through the brush - slow, treacherous work that would've passed more easily with a couple of good machetes - with Luke being made to sacrifice a bit of the edge from his boot knife's blade to free both Travis and himself from some gnarly vines underfoot on a couple of occasions. Once they made it to the trading post, a construction of bamboo wood reinforced with modern materials and housing a large communication disk pointed toward the general direction of the Skyplex and it's Cortex relay satellites, the two men took their agreed upon posts and waited for rosy red daylight.

Back at Ruby, JAX and Mylena prepared their missionary act. Minato would have to decide for himself if he wished to join them, but if he decided to hang back he might be able to help the crew from a distance by working his way into the outpost's local data network. An hour or so after taking position near the trading post, Travis spotted someone stepping out onto a long porch with a steaming cup of coffee. From the cards he recognized Gus Pickett, who appeared to burn his lips on the piping hot liquid and responded with a sharp "Yeow! Dangit!" A second form, slighter and more slender than Gus, stepped out onto the porch with a cup as well.

"'S'matter, Gus? 'Skeeters getcha again?" "Oh. M-m-mornin' Ernie! Oh. Boss! I mean boss. Careful there, Ern - uh - Boss. Coffee shore is hot." "Reckon I learnt to drink coffee a good, long while ago, Gus." "Oh. Good. That's good. Say, Boss. You don't reckon that shiny headed fella with the fancy whiskers noticed me slippin' you that ace last night, do ya? He shore looked like he could tussle. Didn't back down from that big fella none at all." "Quit yet yappin' and drink your coffee, Gus. 'Fore I take to pourin' mine in one o' yer pockets."

The pair enjoyed their coffee in silence, and it wasn't long before shadowy figures made their way up the trail with the first peek of the new day's sun breaking through the jungle in rosy red shards behind their backs. Jumpy as ever, and quicker with his gun than he was with his brains, Gus rushed from the porch with his weapon drawn in one hand and a fresh cup of coffee spilling onto the other. Gus dropped the cup and shook the hot liquid from his hand, wiping any excess on his pant leg. "Aw, heck! Dang ol' Joe done burnt me good. Hey now! Y'all out there! Ain't 'posed to be no deliveries today! If y'all lookin' for trouble I reckon ya done fount it!" From his position, Luke made out the figures of one gracefully moving woman and at least one man. A particularly ornery beam of light prevented the fighter from knowing for sure if they were accompanied by a third.

"Gorramnit Gus! Quit pointin' yer gun at folk ya don't know 'fore ya git yerself shot!" "Heck, Ernie! I'm awful sorry! I guess I got spooked is all. Can't stand ta see ya hurt, y'know? You're my best friend!" Gus put his gun away and waved at the approaching travellers as 'Ernie' shook his head before hollering out from the porch. "Never you mind my associate. This establishment's mighty accommodatin' to them workin' this jungle. And I'm a right friendly fella myself. Especially if y'all fancy playin' cards..."

I know that I hung on a windy tree nine long nights, wounded with a spear, dedicated to Odin, myself to myself, on that tree of which no man knows from where its roots run.
No bread did they give me nor a drink from a horn, downwards I peered; I took up the runes, screaming I took them, then I fell back from there.

The Shuttle Ruby Rose.

This wasn't bad news, but it was late news.  Confirmation of the crimes and history of their targets didn't show hard boiled killers, but there was cause for alarm. There seemed to be three sets: Quinn, Thownshend and Bate; Dalton and Picket and on his own Zheng.

Travis pointed this out as they descended to the planet and added as he held up each of their pictures, "Townshend, dangerous up close; his boss Quinn, fast on the draw, and Miss Bates, dangerous and volatile especially up close. Much like some other ladies we know."

"Dalton looks smart and dangerous, but it's his side kick Pickett that might be first to go for the shooting."

"And then Zheng. Not sure of his connections, if any to the others, but again. Up close a serious difficulty."

Travis had been considering, "Minato, why don't you hang back. Keep our signals clear and see if you can get into whatever local communication situation they might have. Let us know if they get to talking. N'.... maybe once things get interesting, the three of you could transmit some blathering about incoming federal marshal tactic teams circling in and maybe an ASRAV or whatever in the sky."

Travis made sure everyone looked, read and paid attention.

"Good Luck brothers and sisters."

Location: The Jungle of Greenleaf.

Travis got settled in across the trail with a good view of the front of the building. As the two men came outside he snuggled into his little burrow just a little. His rifle was laid out, already sighted in for what would be a fairly short shooting if required.

While Dalton and Pickett made a little early morning banter, he saw the two figures approached as well. He could not yet be sure if it was his crew mates. Pressing his face down into a little hole with his comm in his hand he spoke just above a whisper, "Picket and Dalton out front. Single click if it's you approaching."

'come on Dalton,' Travis wished the man would move on away from the building and join his side kick. If he did they might be able to get those two down and out quick and quiet.

Mylena Yee

Before they went planet-side she asked Minato to see if he could find out where Montgomery Quinn's siblings were at.  She didn't want any surprise guests crashing their party.  She took a moment to exchange a private word and a brief but passionate kiss with Newt. She didn't bring a lot of gear, a smallpack, filled mostly with water, some small food stuffs, and well worn Bible.  In a sheath at her waist was a machete that looked fairly new and suitable for cutting a trail through the jungle.  The only thing she carried was a wooden walking staff that came up about to her shoulder.  With the pleated culotted skirt, high-necked shirt and soft shoes she looked the part of a missionary woman.

As she made her way through the jungle towards the two men on the porch she moved with small and graceful steps, the walking stick carefully poking the path ahead as if searching for snakes.  Only when Gus came forward waving the gun did she falter, making the sign of the cross with her free hand and stopping in her tracks.  Her voice rang out loud enough for Travis and Luke as well as the man on the porch to hear her easily. "Oh mercy no, no delivery here, unless you count carrying Lord's word.  I'm Sister Mary Margaret and I'm on pilgrimage.  I personally don't know much about cards though my guide might be more accommodating.  I'd be much obliged for some coffee and a place to rest for a bit from this heat though."

Newt Declan

Ruby Rose

Newt had shared a loving kiss and a few soft spoken words with Mylena, before she and her team departed for the task at hand. Wrapping a hair ribbon about his right wrist and tying it, he spoke a whispered prayer for the safe return of his beloved as well as his new crewmates.
Focusing his attentions back to his own task of the mission. Newt toggled on the ship's internal intercoms. "Miss Dizzy,do you have any skill in operating sub machine guns? Meet me on the bridge if you have a moment, something I want to show you." Retrieving the FN-P90 and several magazines from his bags,Newt began to lay the items out in a show and tell type pattern. His hopes were that it wouldn't be needed, but just in case he wanted his new crewmate to be as familiar as possible with it's workings. Recalling too that the young mechanic had announced that she was going to work on a surprise herself, should their bounties actions go sideways. It was a good little ship, with a good crew,it was going to be okay, everything was going to be okay.

Jax

Jax was pleased with the ship's performance and Dizzy did manage to adjust the oxygen level much to his liking.
The plan was simple enough nevertheless the gang they needed to round up seemed to be a bit more trouble then first reported. Undisturbed the mission was a go and Jax jumped right into his role. He managed to find some old clothes stored on Ruby. Apparel that was a good bit worn and stained, a perfect costume for someone trekking through the jungle. Albeit ill-fitting, he easily slipped the trousers and coat over his daily wear, a leather slouch hat completed the ensemble.

"Picket and Dalton out front. Single click if it's you approaching."

Jax responded with a single click answering Chao's question as Mylena began the charade making first contact with their quarry. Jax wasn't surprised to find themselves at gun point from minute one. He fought off the instinctive urge to reach for his auto-loader and made no foolhardy moves. Trust the plan. He thought to himself... No need to get blasted this early in the game... And oh how he loved the game.

Jax stepped up a few paces past Mylena. "Did I hear you say cards my good man?!" He pushed his shabby hat back offering a clear view of his face. "Now I've heard the good Lord frowns on such behavior but I'm sure the benevolent Sister here wouldn't begrudge me a few hands." Wearing a beguiling smile Jax turned to Sister Mary Margaret. "And perhaps a drink as well?"

Gus snatched the hat from his head as 'Sister Mary Margaret' stepped toward him after making the sign of the cross. He stumbled through repeating the pattern poorly, likely out of fear and superstition as opposed to personal belief. "Awwww, heck! Beggin' your pardon, Miss. I mean Sister! We ain't been expectin' no lady Shepherds." "That's cuz there ain't no such thing Gus. Ya gotta quit watchin' all'a'dem funny pictures come outta Blue Sun. They're like ta fill yer head with all sorts of strange idears." Earnest smiled wide, revealing a shining platinum tooth in the top of his mouth.

The tooth glinted in the early dawn light to match the sparkle in his eyes as JAX mentioned playing a few hands and inquired about getting a drink. He pushed his own hat back and looked the other man over from the porch, then sat the metal mug on one of the porch's rails of several chutes of bamboo bound by metal bands to make a rough rectangular plank. Earnest took a few steps toward the other man, not quite as far out as Gus had stepped but offering just enough room for a stealthy and inclined individual to step behind him. "Ain't never too early for a good drink, like my ma always says. Especially when cards get involved. Reckon a 'few hands' ought to pass the time fair enough. 'Course, I hope you're travelling with enough paper to make things interestin'." The stick up artist offered JAX a sly wink. "Name's Earnest. Y'all can call me Lucky. Sure as the Red Sun rises that ol' innkeep's got another pot of black brewin'. Ought to set the lady of the cloth to rights, Mr... Oh. Pardon my manners. Don't think I caught your name."

Travis Chao

Ruby Rose.
Travis swore them all in legal like, "... solemnly swear to execute legal orders of bounty and the law, say I do."

Then a little a little lesson in how to quickly hog tie a human being. Getting the loops on quick and fast around the wrists and then the ankles and the quick tightening all at once. It left a prisoner tightly bound faster than they realized it wasn't just a little snap restraining of the wrists. He made it look too simple maybe, but it was easier on a human than a half growed cow.

"Anybody wanna practice on Luke?"

- - - -

On Planet Greenleaf.
Travis watched the windows and door while Mylena and Jax chatted up Earnest and Gus. He was sure by the photos and being as close as he was they had the two men marked. The windows showed no movement, not that he could see very well, which he hoped no one could see very well out if there was a chance peek. They were pretty dirty and it appeared something on the inside had them covered. He didn't figure on fancy drapes.

Front door was closed, surely a nice bit of A.C. inside. With his face pressed back in his comm hole he whispered again, "Come ahead Luke, you have 30 degrees hidden line of sight along the east side." Travis couldn't see that side clearly, but most of the ground around the inn looked fairly clear. Earnest wouldn't see Luke unless he made a near full turn, which was certainly possible.

Chao wanted to whisper instructions, but they had gone over it. It wasn't worth the risk of noise or any distraction to Shepardess M and Jax.

Travis was confident if things went bad outside he'd be able to make plenty of shots and anyone coming out or the two men in front. But them he didn't figure to worry on. They looked to be about to go down one way or the other. He didn't want some sort of siege, getting two quick, quiet and fast would make a big difference.

A little silent prayer asking for all to go well with no one hurt. And that little nagging bit jumping in there, the devil on his shoulder asking what was it exactly he didn't understand about Dead or Alive.

"When you give a personal lesson in meanness to a critter or person, don't be surprised they learn the lesson."

Jax

"Name's Earnest. Y'all can call me Lucky. Sure as the Red Sun rises that ol' innkeep's got another pot of black brewin'. Ought to set the lady of the cloth to rights, Mr... Oh. Pardon my manners. Don't think I caught your name."

"Well thanks Lucky, I be Marcus Jones, employed as a guide for the Sister here, kinda showing her Greenleaf's sights." Jax paused scanning the area for anyone else skulking about. "The Sister here just love's God's creation, though I did try to explain to her that man Terraformed this here planet." So far so good... Jax mused. "I can go for a cup of that black brew and maybe something a bit stronger."

Minato Kaneshiro

Minato didn't like the idea of being idea of staying behind. He may be a bit inept with social interaction but he didn't like the idea of either of looked at as a coward.  Minato quick to defend his own competence to Chao, "I should be fine in the field. I do have military training I wouldn't be useless." Minato's attention turned to Mylena, "It shouldn't take long to get that information." Minato pulled up datapad and ran over the information that he had come across. "They have been in various points in the core worlds as I doubt we will have any pop up visits."   Minato quickly got ready to start the mission and decided to stay quiet for now to allow myself to get ready. He followed Mylena and Jax out with his mind prepared for what was to come.

Mylena Yee

"Mr. Jones, as I've reminded you, all that man does is through God's design." She smiled a long suffering smile in Jax's direction. "I'm afraid we'll have to wait for just a moment for Mr. Lee, our translator, to catch up. He isn't used to this heat.  But sometimes you have to leave the Abbey if you want to carry the word where it's needed most."  She took a few steps closer to Ernest and Gus. "I suppose it would be too much to hope there are some other ladies about to converse with? Too much time in the company of men and away from my Sistern. And the possibility of a bath? That would be Heavenly"
Pale death visits with impartial foot, the cottages of the poor and the castles of the rich.

Dizzy Mcgee

Ruby Rose

Punching the internal comm button she paused for a moment as the console give off a slight hiss of static as it opened the channel

"Right you are, I'm on my way up"

Releasing the button and picking up the crude tazer from her workbench. Sure it wasn't pretty but it was the kind of thrown together project which reminded her of life back in the dustbowl, passing the time in her grandfather's workshop bodging things together and finding that with alittle creativity and alot of out the box thinking you could really suprise yourself sometimes what was possible.

Entering the room she looked at the weaponry that Newt had layed out before she turned her attention to Newt

I thought we wern't going to be expecting trouble?

she said with a slightly puzzled expression feeling that the plan was suddenly not as strightforward as it seemed

I mean sure I know to use them as pretty standard boot camp stuff even though I'm not much of shot.

Minato Kaneshiro

Minato stumbled up to the group with his breath escaping him. As he approached, Minato bowed quickly and repeatedly to each of the group. After wiping his face, he turned to Mylena and said, "Sorry ma'am, I saw the most interesting lizard of there! I don't think I've seen one that big before!" He had to make himself to seem like a non threat to ease their tension. After addressing Mylena, he bowed to Jax as well then turned to the two men and deeply to them as well. "Good day, sirs! The nature out here is amazing, if I do say!"

Stepping closer now to the table, sweeping his had in an open palm gesture over the weaponry. This here is the FN-P90, or as I like to call it, Fighting Newt. It's a bullpup configured ambidextrous, top loaded peace keeper of justice. Fires a 5.7x28mm cartridge, capable of cutting through body armor like a hot knife to butter. Pulling out a small date pad, swiping across it's screen a few times until reaching the desired information before moving closer to share with Dizzy. Miss Dizzy I too hope that no trouble comes about from these Bail Jumpers, but I'm of the midset to be prepared. Plan for the worst, expect the best, that sort of thing. I know the rest of the crew are good at what they do, know that my Mylena can take care of herself, but if this does go sidesways. If we have to go in fast for an Evac situation where you might have to lay down some covering fire and such, just wanted to make sure you were familiar with this little tool.

Travis Chao

On Planet Greenleaf

Travis couldn't remember being as nervous as he was about this job. Normally he'd have hired some tag along guns and make the 'acquisition' by shear force. But these people had in a couple days worked their way on him. He wasn't sure he liked it, but it had a welcoming feel to it of something way back.

'Stay focused' he told himself.

A look again at the windows, the demeanor of the two men out front, position of his own.
'my own?'
A glance up and down the trail. No look behind him. He didn't want to risk even moving his head and tied down black hat. Besides, if someone had the wherewithal to sneak up and be behind him at this point they were well cooked gooses. Geese. Goose.

He smiled.

'Come on Luke'

Gus bowed eagerly to Minato, exerting enough force to lose his hat on the ground. He picked it up, bowed again awkwardly, and beamed as he replaced his head covering. "A lizard! Where!? I used to have me a big dang lizard, back when I was knee high to a grasshopper. Come on now. Y'all gotta show me this heckin' big scaley boy." In his excitement, Gus seemed to forget all of his distrust and started toward the brush in the direction from which Minato approached the group.

"Gorramit, Gus! Don't you remember what you told me? 'Bout that lizard scarin' the livin' daylights outta ya? Ya done told me it still gives ya the worst ruttin' nightmares you ever had! Aw, go hump yerself ya gorram idjit..." Earnest spit in Gus's direction, then turned to Myleena with an apologetic smile. "Aw, pardon me ma'am. Plum forgot how rude it is to -"

*THWAK!*

The blunt end of Luke's boot knife found it's mark at the base of Earnest's skull, dropping the gambler and bank robber to the ground in a heap. "YEEEOW!" A shocked holler from the brush, one the team hoped wouldn't carry into the building, preceeded Gus's reckless retreat. Clearly reconsidering his lizard hunting expedition, the man seemed not to notice Earnest's sudden desire to get some shut eye as he advanced. With the help of a sly and well-timed raise of a boot from Mr. Marcus Jones, Gus lost his rhythm and fell forward. A loud "CLACK" rang out as his jaw struck the dirt and he joined his best pal Ernie in unconsciousness.

While Newt went over his weapons cache with Dizzy, a tremor reverberated through Ruby Rose and a loud "THUMP" was heard overhead. There was a moment of stillness before the first footstep. Then another. And another. The walking pattern was heavy and bipedal, the kind a fully armored Alliance Marine wearing a fully packed rucksack and carrying a big ruttin' gun might make. The steps continued echoing as if right over Newt and Dizzy's heads before stopping. A thick, uncomfortable silence filled Ruby's small galley.

Dizzy listened to Newt give his sales pitch, while her mind wandered slightly as she kind of wished she had a sandwich or a boiled egg. Guns had never really been a big draw for Dizzy and instead just another tool and somthing of a necessity out here in the verse were trouble seemed to be everywhere.

As if on clue the loud THUMP snapped her to attention as she glanced up towards the sound of the noise

"Did you hear that?....what was it you was saying about trouble!"

Her heart beating quicker now as she reached for her holster reassuring herself that she had her pistol with her and hadn't left it on the workbench while she tried to gather her thoughts
