DANIELLE ESTHER "NELLY" NEWCASTLE

Age:  25
Gender:  Female

Primary Occupation:  Alliance Federal Marshal Service (Trainee)
Secondary Occupation (optional):  None
Equipment:  Nelly travels light as a trainee Marshal. She hasn't yet been issued a firearm and isn't allowed much in the way of personal effects, but does have several uniforms and a few changes of civilian clothes for furlow. She keeps a personal cortex unit, as well as her Federal issued device. From home she carries with her a small, worn stuffed magpie named Toon and an ornate hairbrush.

Appearance:  Round faced with big hazel eyes and long blond hair, it might be easy to mistake Nelly as just "a cutie" but if you look closer there's a darkness there. A certainty that while she is of average height and size for a woman, and therefore smaller than most men, she's dangerous.
Faceclaim:  Florence Pugh

Initial Personality:  Sarcastic to a fault, you would never know that not only is she a Federal Trainee, but from a pastoral upbringing on rural Londinium. She's quick tempered and wild, but good natured. Naturally skilled, she often doesn't try very hard and succeeds on her wits alone.
Underlying Personality:  There's a darkness hidden by her joking and jockeying, but not from a lifetime of trauma or a desire to be seen as more than a marriageable asset. It's from boredom. Growing up as she did there were certainly expectations of her, but she couldn't be bothered to fulfill any of them. She is ambitious and cunning and a lot sweeter than she would lead you to believe.

Other History:  Born in rural Londinium, Danielle, Nelly as her family called her, had a pastoral, quaint childhood. Her family, distantly aristocratic that shifted generationally into middle classdom, lived on what once might have been called an estate with a dozen acres consisting of gardens and orchards. It was all mostly run down and the wealth the Newcastle name had once carried was now mostly just in reputation. Her father was a barrister in the capital city and was gone for long stretches of time. Her mother fancied herself a writer and an artist; a sort of bohemian who had been charmed by the more upright Foster Newcastle.

Four sisters, with Nelly square in the middle, left her feeling forgotten, but she capitalized on this by asserting her independence any chance she got. More often in the orchards assisting the caretaker Mr. Boddington, she was an adventurous and rebellious child. This carried into her adolescence and when her oldest sister, Portia, was married at eighteen, it was assumed that would be the fate for all of the sisters. But Ana went to university to follow in Father's footsteps, marrying once she got into the city and eventually starting a firm with her wife; so the door was opened for Nelly to do whatever her heart desired.

The trouble was, she had no idea what that was.

Sasha fell in love with a local boy and revolutionary, and ran away to join partisans on the Rim. Beatrix, more stable and level headed, apprenticed with the local florist before meeting a man and settling down.

Nelly waited. She wasn't sure what she was waiting for, but she felt that she would know it when she found it.

But it found her.

Londinium was largely untouched during the War for Unification. Too deep into the Rim, too heavily policed for the Browncoats to make a move on it. Nelly and her family, with the exception of Sasha who ran toward the conflict, only knew peace and tranquility. Even wartime rationing was minimal. It was as if the war wasn't even happening.
Officially, that is.

Unofficially, there was at least one small conflict that took place on the Capital Planet of the Anglo-Sinho Federal Alliance of Planets, and it happened in the Newcastle apple orchard. As she was wont to do, Nelly was wandering through the trees, ignoring a book she was meant to be reading for school, when a small shuttle craft crash landed in front of her. Nelly watched as a group of war weary Browncoats emerged from the wreckage and began arguing with one another. Eventually, one of them spotted her and took chase. They didn't count on Nelly being Nelly as she gave them a run around in the trees and gardens she knew so well. She even managed to incapacite a couple of them before they caught her and took her back to the house. At gunpoint they held Nelly, her mother, Mr Boddington, and their housekeeper Mrs Darcy.

It wasn't long before Nelly escaped, promising to find help. She just wasn't counting on the help finding her. A mysterious woman, dressed tactically in black, was waiting outside the house as the day faded into night. She asked Nelly for information, which was promptly given, and entered the house to deal with the terrorists. Nelly followed inside and watched as the woman single handedly dealt with the Browncoats one by one.

Afterwards, the woman smiled at Nelly. "What's your name?" she asked.

"Danielle. Nelly." Nelly answered.

"You have potential, Nelly. I watched you from the time they landed. You did well. What do you want to do with your life?"

Nelly looked at the woman and for the first time knew the answer to that question. "I want to do what you do."

The woman laughed. "Maybe you will, one day." And left with the Browncoats cuffed in her own shuttle.

There was never any follow-up on that day from local authorities nor mention of it at all. When asked about it, he father refused to ever speak on it again, despite not having been there at all. Despite the war ending, Nelly decided to enlist with the Navy when she came of age. She finally had a direction and she'd be damned if she'd be dissuaded. And, it turned out, she did have potential. She made it through basic training, passing with flying colors, and entered Officer training where she promptly landed desk duty with Analysis and Logistics. She languished there for six years before putting in for a transfer with the Federal Marshal Service. Perhaps there she would make an actual difference.

Skills and Strengths:  Exceptionally bright with a sarcastic wit, Nelly was taught from a young age to argue and assert herself and never take any guff. In the Navy she received training in close quarters combat and firearms, as well as light piloting. She received passing marks, but nothing exceptional.
Weaknesses:  Her independent streak makes for a lousy teammate and she's never received more than passing grades in anything she's attempted. That is less due to a lack of skill, and more a lack of drive to do better. She tends to push people away rather than letting them in, her acerbic ways can be seen as caustic, but it's really just a defense mechanism.
