Finding Serenity


Finding Serenity is an original-character roleplay set in Joss Whedon's Firefly 'Verse. Events take place after the events of the Serenity movie.

The year is 2519.

Earth-That-Was is long gone. Humans found a new group of solar systems with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. The "Core" planets are civilised, high-tech and under Alliance control. The "Border" worlds are diverse and distinct. The "Rim" is the wild west of the 'verse and the "Black" is where our ships travel, hoping to avoid the perils of space: Alliance, pirates, and the monsters known as Reavers.

So here we are, on the "raggedy edge". This is where our characters live. There are those who stick by the Alliance Government, those who want to rise up against it, and those that just don't care either way as long as they can make a living. With every turn, every choice put forward and every decision made we are FINDING SERENITY

Age:  58

Gender:  Male

Primary Occupation:  Security Systems Specialist

Secondary Occupation:  Mercenary/Advisor


Equipment:  Black briefcase which contains an array of lockpicks, charges, EMP’s, drills and bits, a multi-tool, corepad and plastique.  A pair of beretta’s with silencers, garrote wire, MP-5 machine gun, X-Bolt Pro rifle, combat knife, a dozen throwing knives, hatchet.  A lot of black clothes, a heavy black duster and a pendant with his wife and daughters pictures in it.


Appearance:  Standing 6’1” tall and a solid 235 lbs with shaggy, ear-length salt and pepper hair, heavy on the salt.  Usually carries a lot of scruff with a thick mustache that’s maintained much of the darkness that’s faded from the rest of his hair.  His sturdy frame is still toned and muscular despite his advanced age but is riddled with scars.  His left side torso has scars from IED shrapnel, his right pectoral has a scar from a high caliber bullet-wound from years ago with the accompanying exit wound on his back right shoulderblade.  Knife-wound scars are scattered across his right shoulder, rib and neck as well as his left thigh, calf and forearm.  Left cheek also has a scar though more recent than the rest.  Many more less spectacular war tattoos are peppered along his body.  His right eye is brown, his left eye is missing a cybernetic eye implant in its place but usually covered by a black eye patch.

Initial Personality:  Professional and terse, not a great conversationalist, his presence usually speaks to his personality more than his words might.  Not overly fond of human interaction.


Underlying Personality:  Remorseful of a past paved in blood and war, regret for those he killed and those he didn’t save.  Beyond that there’s not much more under the surface.  Despite his regrets he still acts cold and calculated.  On the odd occasion he does deem to like someone he can be quite protective with brutal efficiency against those who try to harm them.  Intelligent, well-thought and organized.


Known History:  As a child he spent his life on military bases, his single mother was a soldier.  His father an engineer who died when he was a youth.  Both were strong influences in his life growing up despite his fathers passing.  His mother trained him in combat as she was a drill instructor who specialized in close combat.  He took a liking to his father’s trade as well helping tinker with devices and kept a lot of his father’s blueprints and texts after his passing and continued to work on them.  When he was old enough he enlisted in the military and quickly advanced until he was recruited for special forces duties.  This led him down a brutal and bloody path taking part in many missions against the Independent Forces until he met a woman in his early twenties who made him think about life after the military.  They bought a ranch on Paradiso together and produced a daughter, who stayed with his wife on the ranch while he was away on tours of duty.  Nearing retirement from active duty his wife and daughter developed illness, later diagnosed as Bowden’s.  This prolonged his career as the medical expenses piled up, however this also drove a wedge between the two as he was rarely home and when he was he grew to be quite distant due to the nature of his work.

Eventually his wife left their ranch with their daughter without word.  He returned to their ranch to find it abandoned months before.  He remained with the special forces from then on, selling the ranch and renting apartments wherever he was stationed and living a more or less nomadic life.  In his late forties he was struck by an IED during a raid which ended his military career and leaving him with one less eye.  With no family and no path he returned to his old family home and started a business as a security expert specializing in locksmithing and electronic security while tinkering with old designs from his father.  As far as public records show, that is the business he runs to this day and is located on Iscariot Space Station known as Zen Security Solutions.

Other History:  Being a product of an Alliance upbringing there is very little not unknown about the man., at least not until his later years.  He spent his fortune seeking out his wife and daughter by developing connections in the black market; in return he would provide advice on cracking different security systems.  Eventually his connections started to use rumours of his wife’s whereabouts as leverage to get him to work the jobs himself which he did.  This rabbit hole never produced his child or his wife’s location but produced a lucrative new career as a cracker and mercenary, using his experience to lead green but ambitious crews to small fortunes and cementing his reputation.

Skills and Strengths:  A once highly skilled combat specialist, he can still throw down when needed and a quality shot if not an excellent one, can pick almost any lock due to his mix of practical know how and technology, his experience and professionalism as well as a pre-existing reputation come to his aid in many situations not to mention his physical presence and menacing look.


Weaknesses:  Lack of depth perception makes him a poor pilot not that he could fly worth a damn before anyway and also has reduced his accuracy with a gun, age and injury has limited his physical abilities.  A life as a soldier and after that a second career as a cracker have left him devoid of much of a personality which leaves little trust for anyone who has dealings with him and therefore very few friends.  For all his war wounds he's surprisingly lacking any real first aid training.
