Man for Hire

Ariel was pleasant this time of year, bright rainbows of perfectly pruned flowers were blooming in full, young women were frolicking in gardens and brightening up the scenery with their colorful fluttering dresses and the melodic sounds of their bubbling laughter, and young socialites were away on holiday or finding themselves feeling more adventurous than they might have felt later in the year. Of course, this led to far more accidental stabbings and scraped egos, but that was perfectly alright with Reuben Boyers. He was a Doctor after all, and every failed duel and adventurous holiday gone wrong was another coffer in his pocket, so to speak. He would have been remarkably pleased with the way this season was going if it weren't for one little blemish in the perfect painting of his life.

In order to rectify this little problem, Reuben had called in a specialist, someone who could fix things up for him without the good Doctor ever needing to step out of his office. As it were, the man was waiting for said contact to arrive in a spacious half indoor half outdoor study. Three of its walls were solid, decorated with wood shelving, books, trinkets from all over the universe, and historical artifacts, everything in shades of warm reds and browns. The third and longest wall was made up of columns, the garden plainly visible beyond the pillars. A cool breeze filtered in through the gaps in the architecture, ruffling Reuben's perfectly styled hair and moving the corners of some of the papers littering his desk. The double doors to the room were opposite his desk, the column on the left for anyone entering the room.

A pair of smartly dressed servants, one a small and mild mannered maid with blonde ringlets held up in a tight bun and the other an elderly butler with his hair parted down one side and combed over properly, waited at the front of the estate for their guest to arrive.

Akhsar King

Akhsar King pulled up to the estate in an older model SUV type vehicle. A big, black, monstrous thing that lacked all subtlety and could be heard from a mile away. It wasn't actually his, he was just borrowing it for the day, and it served a purpose beyond simply getting him to his meeting. It said something about him, about who he was. Of course the fact that whatever it said about him wasn't true was the reason he'd chosen the vehicle. Never hurt to throw people a curve ball or two. Especially cocky young nobles.

He opened the door and stepped down from the elevated cab. He was dressed very informally in a dark green T shirt, khaki cargo pants, combat boots, sunglasses, and a shemagh draped around his neck. His sidearm was holstered on his hip, and there was a replacement magazine and a six inch combat knife on his belt, which honestly he should have just left in the truck... but appearances were important. He looked drastically out of place.

King looked around at the estate, shrugged, closed the truck door and walked over to the elderly gent who looked to be a butler. "Hey there uh, my names King. Akhsar King. I'm here for an appointment with... ah..." He dug a small note pad out of his pocket and flipped through it. "AH! A Mr Boyers? Er, Lord Boyers?" Of course he hadn't actually forgotten the mans name, but again, appearances mattered.

Reubin Tommy Boyers was, by all accounts, gods gift to man kind. Everyone refereed to him like a best friend, and he was apparently incredibly devoted to his fiance. Or had been, until her disappearance after the fire that killed her parents. That was apparently the gossip of the century. But no one had a bad thing to say about Mr Boyers, which was worrying, no one was that perfect. Everybody had somebody who didn't like them. Especially cocky young nobles.

"Hey there uh, my names King. Akhsar King. I'm here for an appointment with... ah...AH! A Mr Boyers? Er, Lord Boyers?" the stranger informed them.

The servants exchanged a somewhat startled glance before the aging butler offered Mr. King a welcoming smile and a curt nod of acknowledgement. "Welcome to the Boyers' Estate, Mister King," he greeted with the barest Londinium accent, one that had been polished from a lower born dialect to be appropriately befitting of a butler of his station. While the butler spoke, the maid turned to open the double doors, a stray curl bouncing prettily at the nape of her neck, something there quite on purpose. "This way, if you please," she murmured in a gentle tone, smiling warmly up at Akhsar King and holding one of the doors open and out of his way.

Once inside, they led him on the long path to the study, walking him by a large grand staircase and veering off to the right to move down a hall lined with impressively painted portraits and vases filled with exotic plants and flowers. Everything they passed was intended as a show of wealth and status to the man who very clearly did not fit in here. Only after he'd been shown everything but the bedrooms did they drop him off in front of the intended door, the maid once more pushing it open to allow him in.

With the way the room was built, Reubin's large mahogany desk was the first thing one would see upon opening the two doors. This was swiftly followed by the man himself and then the visual display came to a halt upon the ungodly large painting behind his seat. In it, Charity Vornbach and Reuben Boyers stood side by side in golden frippery, likely celebrating their engagement. Reubin looked smug and pleased, the apparent doting fiance, while the painter had managed to capture something in Charity's eyes...something akin to the warmth in the eyes of a doe, but also its need to flee. All in all, it was beautiful, as it should have been, and completely unnecessary in its grandeur.

"Ah! Just who I was hoping to see, welcome!" Reuben exclaimed, standing and spreading his arms out before him, as though showing the world the absolute adoration and camaraderie he felt for the man in the doorway, the man who would help him fix his nearly perfect life.

Akhsar King

King bobbed his head at the butlers welcome. He picked out the mans accent as... Londinium? But a lower class accent. Polished, but still. Well, good on him for working his way up the ladder.

The pretty maid bade him follow her. "Ah, yes, of course." He bobbed his head again, returning her smile, and followed along though the large doorway. He made sure to not only note the layout of the building, but also to stare at everything like the easily-impressed-by-wealth-and-grandeur person he imagined they thought he was. It was a tactic he had seen before. Even used by his own family back on Persephone. They gave him what seemed nearly a tour of the entire building, minus the servants quarters, kitchen, and bedrooms, before finally coming to what he assumed would be Mr Boyers office or study.

Once again the maid pushed the door open for him. He gave her another smile and again bobbed his head, and then entered the room. The space was dominated by the large mahogany desk, and the unreasonably large painting behind it. The painter had been good, the likenesses were spot on from what pictures he'd seen of Miss Charity Vornbach, and from the man himself, Reuban Boyer, who stood with arms spread in a gesture of welcome behind his desk. The gesture was a bit much, and King felt the manipulative intent in it. But a job was a job.

Maintaining his persona, he removed his sunglasses and let his eyes linger on the painting, allowing a measured quantity of awe to show on his face before seeming to drag his eyes down to Reuben.

He inclined his head and gave a friendly smile. "Thank you Mr Boyer. Its... well, its quite an impressive place you have here." The appreciation in his voice was real, it was an impressive estate. He deliberately used a generic honorific instead My Lord, or Doctor, partially because this was business, and partially because he wondered if it would irk the man at all.

He glanced up at the painting again before appearing to tear his eyes away to look back at the young noble. He flipped a coin in his head, it came up tails. "What, ah, what can I do for you? You're request for a meeting was rather, uh, light on details." He said, absent mindedly sliding his sunglasses into a pocket on his cargo pants.

"Thank you Mr Boyer. Its... well, its quite an impressive place you have here," King complimented.

Reuben nodded his head in thanks and lowered his hands, setting the tips of his fingers atop the surface of his large desk. There was the barest twitch of one of his eyes at the lack of a title in the man's greeting, but Reuben was a generous man and he's let that slide. A hand came up to wave away the elderly butler, although the made swept into the room and shut the door behind them, gliding to a large antique globe near the doctor's desk. She opened it, revealing the decanter of a deep amber liquid inside and removed the glass top, pouring the alcohol into two gold rimmed tumblers.

"What, ah, what can I do for you? You're request for a meeting was rather, uh, light on details," King asked.

"Ah, right to business, you're a man of remarkable professionalism," the man complimented, gesturing with his hand toward one of the plush emerald green wingback chairs facing his desk. Between them was a wooden table upon which the maid set one of the glasses, the other placed by Reuben's  hand for easy reach. With one more smile in King's direction, the peppy blonde made her way out of the room, once more shutting the door behind her. "I do apologize for the lack of details, Mister King. This particular request of mine must be handled discretely, I'm sure you're aware how quickly gossip can travel in our circles," he apologized, looking quite contrite, like a friend begging the pardon of another well loved friend.

He sat back in his chair behind the desk and gestured toward the painting, picking up his glass of whiskey and taking a politely small sip. "You see, my fiancee has absconded with some very important items of mine, family heirlooms, you see, and I am most desperate to have them returned. My poor mother has been absolutely distraught to lose these things, and I need you to bring them back or...if that cannot be arranged, to bring my dear Charity home so she may assist us in the retrieving of these precious treasures," he explained, nodding sadly. Again he turned to look up at the portrait behind his desk, his free hand settling over his heart like one might expect of a heartbroken lover wishing only to see his beloved again, just the right amount of stars in his eyes as he looked her painted face over, the rim of his glass hovering near his lips.

King noticed the tiny twitch of Reuben's eye, pleased that the lack of title had gotten a reaction. It was also interesting to note that Reuben didn't correct him. In his experience most nobles did. Boyer waved away the butler, but the maid stayed to serve them drinks. The amber liquid in gold rimmed tumblers was a nice touch. He also noticed that he hadn't been asked, it was just assumed that he would take a drink.

Quote"Ah, right to business, you're a man of remarkable professionalism,"

King nodded, at the compliment, giving his impression of a simple grin. Boyer gestured towards the large wingbacked chairs, and King sat. The maid deposited one glass near him, the other near Boyer, and then exited the room.

Quote"I do apologize for the lack of details, Mister King. This particular request of mine must be handled discretely, I'm sure you're aware how quickly gossip can travel in our circles," "You see, my fiancee has absconded with some very important items of mine, family heirlooms, you see, and I am most desperate to have them returned. My poor mother has been absolutely distraught to lose these things, and I need you to bring them back or...if that cannot be arranged, to bring my dear Charity home so she may assist us in the retrieving of these precious treasures,"

While Boyer spoke King made a show of picking up his glass, giving it an appreciative sniff, and taking a small measured sip. It was good stuff. He was of course paying full attention as Boyer outlined the nature of the job. It all sounded plausible enough, but something about the man irked King, and he wasn't sure what it was. It was more than the fact that he was a rich young playboy who probably thought he owned the world and everything on it, though that certainly didn't help.

King made a contemplative noise. "The items would probably be a lot easier to track down than your missing bride-to-be, assuming she's sold them. Or tried to." He trailed off and paused for a moment. "Before we get into my rates and details about the items, I will say that I don't really do... kidnap jobs, as it were. If I cant find the items in question but do manage to locate her, I'll be happy to drop her location to you, or the local authorities if you'd rather. Is that acceptable?"

Reuben waved a hand and smiled easily, hiding the stiffening of his shoulders and sharply annoyed inhale following the man's strict 'no kidnapping' policy. He was very clearly displeased with the current situation but he knew this man was his best chance at getting back what was lost. Again, Reuben smiled winningly and made a show of taking a deep and contemplative sip of his own drink before setting the glass down and turning it in slow circles between his index finger and thumb, the gold at the rim of the glass glimmering softly as the light bounced across it. "Oh, of course, I would never ask you to kidnap someone, my could you imagine?" he asked, laughing easily and glancing up at the portrait behind him once more before returning his gaze to his guest, looking contemplative and somewhat mournful, although it was made to look as though he were mourning the disappearance of his fiancee.

"I am quite positive my dearest Charity still has my items on her person, she is not in need of the money and was quite fond of the items she took," he assured King, nodding a little and reaching forward to organize the pile of thick and ornately headed papers on his desk, getting the contract ready that the'd drafted upon calling the man to his estate. With a tight grin, Reuben picked up his black and silver fountain pen and scratched out the bit about bringing Charity home, amending it appropriately with rich ebony ink. "I would prefer it if you informed me of her location once you find her, as opposed to the local authorities. I'd like to avoid the scandal that might cause, of course," he continued, setting the pen down and looking up at King with raised brows, seeking his approval on the updated plan.

King picked up on Reuben's displeasure at the "no kidnap jobs" comments, but in classic fashion the noble covered it with humor and charm.

Quote"Oh, of course, I would never ask you to kidnap someone, my could you imagine?"

Interesting. Boyer had definitely been hoping for the kidnap option. That made King a little nervous, and a bit curious. Which only deepened as the young doctor went on.

Quote"I am quite positive my dearest Charity still has my items on her person, she is not in need of the money and was quite fond of the items she took,"
"I would prefer it if you informed me of her location once you find her, as opposed to the local authorities. I'd like to avoid the scandal that might cause, of course,"

This was going to turn out to be all about Charity, and not have anything to do with the stolen items. Or at least that is what Kings gut was telling him. Boyer kept narrowing the field. First it at been "recover the items, or if you cant, find Charity". Now it was "Charity will definitely have to items on her person". The comment about not wanting to involve the local law could be taken either at face value, or as another sketchy thing to add to the list. A job was a job, but there were limits.

King took out his note pad and jotted some things down. "Right, well, I'll still put out some feelers on the items. Never know when a young woman on the run might need some cash. And as far as notifying you instead of law enforcement, that is perfectly fine. I understand the desire to keep a scandal out of the press, what with her being wanted for questioning about her parents deaths."

Reuben's brilliant eyes narrowed for the briefest of moments, although he was quick to turn it into the natural narrow of the eyes when one smiled, his lips turning upward in some mix of joviality and pleasure. Picking up the amended contract, the Doctor blew on the new, still damp ink and turned the papers around, pushing them toward the edge of his desk closest to King.

"Yes, I am thrilled that you understand," he praised warmly, looking the man's face over and peering downward toward his notebook curiously. "Now, if you'll look over this contract, please let me know if you'd like to make any changes," he began, picking up his silver and black pen once more and setting it atop the pile, fully expecting the man to sign it as it was. "Otherwise, you can sign at the bottom," he added, his eyes bright as he looked over his new comrade and employee. Or, soon to be temporary employee.

Reuben leaned back in his chair and glanced back at the portrait, turning his chair a little so his sides faced his guest on one side and Charity's portrait on the other. "I'm sure you can understand how eager I am for my things to be returned to me," he began, looking out toward the bright, blooming garden past the marble columns running along the full expanse of one wall. "It will bring my family great peace," he added, almost as an afterthought.

Something around Boyers eyes at the comment about his fiances parents deaths? A narrowing? Covered quickly enough that King was quite sure if he'd even seen it. And if he had it could easily be explained away as a reaction to someone bring up a painful memory. No way to tell for sure. Except maybe torture.

Quote"Yes, I am thrilled that you understand," "Now, if you'll look over this contract, please let me know if you'd like to make any changes," he began, picking up his silver and black pen once more and setting it atop the pile, fully expecting the man to sign it as it was. "Otherwise, you can sign at the bottom,"

King nodded, picked up the contract, and pulled out a pair of reading glasses. King had perfect vision of course, and the lenses were fake, but the persona had to be maintained. He read through the contract deliberately slowly, as Reuben continued.

Quote"I'm sure you can understand how eager I am for my things to be returned to me," "It will bring my family great peace," he added, almost as an afterthought.

"Yes, yes. Of course. I will do everything I can to see your items returned to you." He reached over and picked up the pen, and began writing one further article to the contract, his penmanship almost as good as Boyers. "The contract looks good, just one further thing my lawyer makes me put on all my contracts. Its a pretty basic thing. In legalese it more or less says that-" here his voice took on a bored tone of someone reciting something very dull, "-If any information that has been given to the the finder (Mr King) is discovered to have been deliberately given with the knowledge that it is false, or given in bad faith, this contract will be considered null and void. There will be no obligations enforced on either party, with the exception of the non refundable deposit given to the finder (Mr King) at the signing of this contract."

Finished writing, he blew lightly on the ink, to help it dry, and then offered it back to Boyer. "You're welcome to look over it again before we sign, but I'm ready when you are." He was quite curious to see if this would finally break the mans composure and have King thrown out.

The Doctor nodded and set his hands on his lap, listening to the man speak and staring out at a pair of butterfly dancing on the wind out in the garden. Of course he'd need to add something, and while it did bother Reuben, he expected it'd be something similar to a waiver of injury or something a lawyer would insist upon in regards to a greater finders fee than the one previously discussed. He did not, however, expect the addendum that King did add.

Keeping the side of his face turned toward his guest, Reuben picked up his glass once more, swished the amber drink around in a slow circular motion, then brought the rim to his lips, taking a long, drawn out, thoughtful sip. A brief silence spilled out between them as he made a show of drinking, his gaze still focused upon the flowers and an occasional bird settling down in the branches of a tree. When he felt calm enough, the glass lowered back into its place upon the desk and Reuben turned his chair forward once more, offering King a professional and slightly less warm smile, the twinkle in his eye dulled.

"You're welcome to look over it again before we sign, but I'm ready when you are," King informed him.

"That all sounds perfectly reasonable to me, Mister King," he told him with almost forced ease. "You have a magnificent lawyer, I would absolutely love to employ him myself, if he is available," he continued, waving his hand toward the contract and the pen in the man's hand, signifying that he was given the 'ok' to sign first. Standing, the man moved away from his desk toward the antique globe, his glass in one hand. Uncorking the glass decanter, Reuben picked it up by the neck and poured himself another glass, glancing back at King with a raised brow to see if he wanted any more, although the gesture seemed reluctant.

King watched Reuben's reaction with inward glee. Also with the notion that his gut feeling was quite possible right, and there might not even be any missing items. People generally didn't react like that if everything they'd given him was on the level. When Boyer finally turned back to look at King, the mans smile was colder, more professional, and less friendly. And the spark in his eyes had changed.

Quote"That all sounds perfectly reasonable to me, Mister King," "You have a magnificent lawyer, I would absolutely love to employ him myself, if he is available,"

Boyer almost had to force the words out it seemed. He gestured to King that he could go ahead and sign, before getting up and walking towards the globe containing the alcohol. King quickly signed the contract and slid it back across the desk to where Reuben would sign it, neatly laying the pen atop it.

By this point the man had refilled his own glass, and turned with an almost reluctant questioning look about Kings glass. "Oh, I thank you for the offer, but one is plenty. I have to drive back to my hotel after our meeting after all."

"Oh, I thank you for the offer, but one is plenty. I have to drive back to my hotel after our meeting after all," the man declined politely.

With a small shrug, Reuben placed the cork back into its proper place and walked leisurely toward the desk, setting his glass down and bending forward to look over what King had added, along with his signature. Even after he'd finished reading, he seemed to stare at the contract, contemplating his options. Finally, however, Reuben picked up the pen, turned the papers toward himself and signed his name in flourished, perfect script.

Picking it up, he blew on the ink and reached out with his free hand to press his index finger atop a button inlaid in his desk. Almost immediately the maid opened the door and stepped in, looking at them both expectantly an waiting for orders. He turned and slid his copy into a drawer along the side of his desk before taking out a few more papers. Reuben prepared the second copy of the contract, painstakingly adding both new addendum to the fresh, crisp paper. To his credit, he did write the entirety of King's addition, making both contracts absolutely identical. Signing it somewhat angrily, he slid it across the table along with his pen so King could sign his own copy. They both needed one, after all.

"Gemma here will escort you back to your vehicle, once you've finished," he informed King, remaining standing and staring at the man with some measure of curiosity. "I do hope you'll be able to locate our missing items," he added, his expression easing back into a charming smile, his eyes once more alight with it. The maid held one door open and watched both men, one corner of her honey lips turned up sweetly, her free hand resting demurely in front of her lap.

Boyer took his time coming back to the desk, as well as with reading the contract. Taking even longer than King had originally, but finally signing it. He then called for the maid, and prepared a second copy of the contract for King. He painstakingly recreated the first contract, additions and all. Boyer signed it almost angrily, and slit it over for King to sign, which he did.

Quote"Gemma here will escort you back to your vehicle, once you've finished," he informed King, remaining standing and staring at the man with some measure of curiosity. "I do hope you'll be able to locate our missing items,"

Boyer said, remaining standing and watching King.

Quote"I do hope you'll be able to locate our missing items,"

The mans expression transitioning back to the charming smile that he had worn when King first entered the room. King nodded, assuming details about the items would be given to him by the maid or butler. Nobles often found describing things beneath them. "Of course. It is a pleasure to have met you Doctor Boyer. I will be in touch." He moved to the doorway, stopping just before he was even with the maid to turn back to Reuben. "By the way, you should have that Caedmon hanging in the second hall looked at. Fairly certain its a fake, because I found the real one for a different client somewhat recently." He nodded with a friendly smile, and turned back to follow the pretty maid out.

Reuben had been nodding along and raising a hand to indicate that he'd be waiting to hear from Mister King when the man informed him of a fake hanging in his household. His hand paused mid wave and the man stared after King with what looked like some strange mixture of horrified shock and insulted fury. It was unclear if he was angry at King for pointing it out or upset with whoever he'd bought the apparent fake from. Either way, he was going to make a mental note to have said person fired and the painting thrown out.

With a gentle smile, Gemma shut the door behind them to shield King from any potential outrage flying out from Reuben in all directions. "This way," she directed in a soft, melodic voice, guiding him toward the entrance to the estate and taking a smaller data pad from one of her apron pockets. "I'll send you a packet containing the missing items that Doctor Boyers would like you to retrieve," she began, fingers moving over the screen, "As well as your initial deposit and the first half of your payment," she continued, looking up at him with a warm twinkle in her eyes, her voice calming and tender.

When they got to the front door, she held the data pad out to him, the screen showing four images: One obscenely ornate diamond and emerald encrusted necklace that looked heavier than a small dog, a ring made up of glimmering sapphires all formed in the shape of a butterfly, a dress inlaid with real gold thread and embroidered with crystals and diamonds, and a hairpin in the shape of a woman with an arched back very similar to Earth That Was art nouveau, likely made from solid gold. Of course, there was no proof here in the photos that any of these items originally belonged to the Boyers', but that was the claim.

King hid his grin until the door was closed. The look on Boyers face would probably be the highlight of Kings day. The maid bid him follow her, and he did. He was already going through his mental contacts list, deciding who to call first about locating the items and the woman.

The maid took out a small data pad.

Quote"I'll send you a packet containing the missing items that Doctor Boyers would like you to retrieve," she began, fingers moving over the screen, "As well as your initial deposit and the first half of your payment,"

King nodded. "That would be good, cant rightly find the items if I dont know what they look like."

They made it to the front door and she held the data pad out for him to see. He let out a low whistle. "Well, I can see why he would want those back. They definitely look valuable."

He paused for a moment, contemplating the maid, and decided to gamble a little. He very obviously looked around to ensure they were alone, and then spoke. "So is he on the level with all of this?"

"So is he on the level with all of this?" the man asked.

For a moment, Gemma looked startled, the data pad pressed against her chest as though it were a serving tray and her lips parted ever so slightly. It didn't take her long to compose herself, however, years of training and experience taking control over her emotions. The maid stared at him with what might have been a cross expression before her eyes seemed to jerk away from him in some attempt to check for herself if they were alone or not.

With a deep breath, she returned her gaze to his own and smiled weakly, wincing a little as though his question or perhaps her answer pained her. "Doctor Boyers is an upstanding gentleman, sir. He would not lead you astray," she murmured as she was likely meant to, although her brows were knit in concern and a slight subconscious nibbling of her lower lip likely indicated her conflicted feelings about having to say so.

"I do hope you will be able to find our...the missing items," she added as an after thought before moving away from him and opening the door, looking his face over with some mixture of curiosity and what might have been the slightest amount of worry.

King watched Gemmas face carefully as she reacted to his question.

Quote"Doctor Boyers is an upstanding gentleman, sir. He would not lead you astray,"

He noted the startled break in her composure, her swift recovery, her wince during her answer, her knit brows, and the slight nibble of her lip. All of it together made him suspect that there was either some part of the job that wasn't on the level, or at the very least some information he was not being given. That or Boyer has never been anything but good and kind to her and she was genuinely insulted by his question. His smile turned a little lopsided an he bobbed his head. "Of course, a very upstanding gentleman."

Quote"I do hope you will be able to find our...the missing items,"

She moved over to the door and opened it. Looking back at him with what could have been curiosity, or worry. He met her gaze for another few seconds, taking a moment to appreciate that she was quite a beautiful woman, then sighed and nodded. "I will do my best to find your missing.... items." He removed his fake reading glasses, slipping them back into a pocket and replacing them with his sunglasses.

"Well then, I best get to work. You have a wonderful day miss Gemma." He walked purposefully back to the monstrous SUV and climbed aboard. The big engine roared to life and he turned and drove off the estate.

Once out on the road he pulled out his cortex pad and put in a connection request. "Hey, its me. Yeah I'm looking for 4 particular items, I'll forward you the images, lemme know if any of your fences have come across them. Yeah, usual deal. Thats fine. Take care." He ended the call and sat back to enjoy the rest of his drive.
