Black Betty

Name: Sabrina Kurigawa
Age:  35-ish
Gender:  Female

Occupation:  Restaurateur, Business owner
Secondary:  Underground Street Fighter

Appearance:
Although Sabrina appears to be only in her mid to late twenties, she's more than likely closer to around 35-37 ish. Or, so she assumes based upon the dog tag found around her neck, which was her only identifying feature when she was found.

The metal tags list only 3 lines of data; the top line reads "A-01." The two lines underneath appear to be dates; the second line reads "22.05.2482" and the last line reads "15.06.2500". She assumes her birthdate is the former, because she's definitely no meager girl of 19.

Sabrina's looks can be summed up in one word: Voluptuous. Earth that was used to have an entire obsession with women like her. Pin-ups and Betties they were called, and Sabrina fits the ticket; her natural hourglass shape measures out at 34-25-38.

Sabrina has a clear complexion with a few random freckles here and there, but the lightly tanned tone of her skin tends to make most of these invisible to the naked eye.  Her face is unblemished save for a scar on her left eyebrow and another by her right ear that extends down across her jaw.

Sabrina stands at a surprising 5'11" and weighs in around 87 kilos. A majority of that is muscle weight, however. She is not overly muscled, but she does maintain an exercise routine and she does a fair amount of manual labor to keep her fit and toned.

Other than her startling cerulean blue eyes, Sabrina has several other distinguishing characteristics; like a slash mark that runs from her left shoulder clear down to the apex of her right hip, along with a couple other smaller cut wounds on her arms and stomach. She also has a bullet wound in her right shoulder, another just below her rib cage on her right side, one on her left thigh, and two near her left hip. Clearly she's seen a fair bit of action in her day. Other than the few years old bullet hole in her right shoulder, don't ask her how any other wound happened, for she couldn't tell you.

Lastly, there is also a scar that runs across the base of her skull, and another down the middle her neck right along the center of her brain stem. The scar forms something like a cross on her neck but her hair grows so thick and dark around it that this scar is only visible when she puts her hair up.

Sabrina has a fairly simple dress style, preferring tank tops and cargo pants to dresses and skirts. She owns a couple dresses but it would have to be a damn special occasion for her to wear one. Sabrina likes to be prepared for anything so she prefers clothes she can move and maneuver around in. Nothing too constricting, but she doesn't mind a little slink. Her favorite color is hunter green, but she mainly dresses in dark neutrals; blacks, dark reds browns blues and greens, and the occasional feminine touch of lavender or violet. She prefers to be barefoot whenever possible, but most of her footwear consists of military boots and the occasional strappy sandal or two.

Sabrina is far from skinny, but nor is she a cow. She wears about a size ten comfortably, and fills out a little more than a b cup with her bust size. Her hair reaches down to the small of her back, but mostly she wears it up in a messy bun, or long braid. When she wears make up, it is very minimal and subtle. Usually just a little eyeliner and lip gloss.

PlayBy Name:Liv Tyler

Equipment:  Though not opposed to firearms, Sabrina considers herself a traditionalist... Not the big mustache kind, but the kind that prefers blades to bullets. As such, she has quite an extensive knife collection.
Even though she may not like firearms, she's not opposed to keeping one or two around.
Initial Personality:  Sabrina can seem astute and serious a majority of the time, however she is comfortable most when among close friends and comrades, and can be quick and easy to laughter and joking in their presence. Her sense of humour is highly satirical and usually dripping in sarcasm. Sabrina can be very brash and to the point. Sabrina has a no-bull-shit type of personality. What you see is what you get. She tells it like it is and expects the same in return. She is not afraid to call a complete stranger out on his or her bull shit. She's pretty good at reading people, too, so she can tell when and if someone is lying to her, or trying to play her. Sabrina is highly protective, sometimes overly protective, of what she considers hers; whether that be possessions or people she cares about.

From time to time, Sabrina can be the epitome of the strong, silent type. She keeps a very stoic countenance and it takes a lot, and she means a lot to get her to open up... At least about personal things. She keeps everything close to the vest, including her feelings and emotions, and especially her past. At least the bits that she can remember.

Over the years since the death of her pseudo-parents which devestated her, Sabrina has built up walls upon walls upon walls around herself and it is near impossible to penetrate her emotional defenses. Sabrina does not trust easily, however, she gives everyone a chance to earn said trust. The exception here being her 'brother' Nathaniel; he is one of the select few who gets to see the side of Sabrina on a regular basis that very few others do.

Sabrina is a woman of very few words, however that does not mean she lacks intelligence. Quite the contrary, actually. Sabrina has a very bright and intellectual mind, especially when it comes to gardening, art and hydroponics. She simply does not like longwinded conversations. Sabrina is very direct and to the point, always speaks her mind and very rarely ever lies. Sabrina is typically very cool, calm and calculated under pressure. She is known to be able to keep a level-head even in the direst of straits.

There is nothing Sabrina values more than loyalty and honesty; in herself and in others. These are two of her strongest qualities, and traits she looks for and values in those she holds dear and close. Whereas she may not be so easy to trust a fellow Browncoat, she would have said Browncoat's back in a heartbeat, simply for the fact that they were on the same side. On the subject of loyalty, Sabrina views betrayal as the most grievous crime or sin on this plane. To betray her trust and loyalty is almost a death sentence with her, whether that be figuratively or literally depends on the circumstance of the betrayal.

Sabrina tends to take offense when people try to hit on her(the occasional exception applies if she finds the person interesting to begin with). Sabrina is nothing if not a proud woman and there's little else she hates more than being underestimated or when someone tries to take advantage of her simply because she's a woman.

Sabrina is one of those people that would rather go a year without having sex instead of shacking up with some random stranger. Sometimes a good brawl or fight, or hell even an intense workout is enough to relieve some of that tension and get those endorphins going.

Underlying Personality:  Sabrina is both fire and ice; she can be cold and harsh on the outside, but running hot, wild and explosive at her core. Sabrina can be quick to anger with worthless and stupid people, especially mercs and alliance. Beneath the serious and sometimes icy exterior burns the soul of a very passionate woman, however no one has managed to awaken true passion within her. It is only amongst close family and friends that a lighter side of Sabrina can be seen and in those rare moments it is easy to see the type of woman she might have been once upon a time; compared to the closed off and distant one she is now.

Beneath the unapproachable exterior also beats the heart of a true artist. Sabrina is a rather gifted painter, caligrapher and sketcher. Some of the paintings that decorate her restaurant are of her own doing, though she does not flaunt that fact.

Known History:
Sabrina's first detailed memory that she can recall is waking up in a ship infirmary, in a hospital bed with one man in a white coat checking her over, while two men in brown coats stood to the side. She couldn't hear anything they were saying before she blacked out again.

The second time she woke up, the number of brown coats in the room had quadrupled and alarms were blaring; people were shouting, and Sabrina was holding a scalpel to a man's neck. She ended up coming to her senses before doing anything drastic, but the damage had still been done. They were afraid of her now and her security detail had doubled. Later Sabrina had found out that she had been having an intense, albeit violent nightmare and the poor doctor had only been trying to stir her awake, to his utter regret. There was one man out of all of them, however, who chose to look upon her in sympathy over fear.

Geoffrey Kurigawa was an older gentleman. Lived, experienced. Fought against the Alliance from the start it seemed. He was very familiar with their ways and tactics and this girl had Alliance pet project written all over her. From the unmarked uniform they found her in, then the tags hanging around her neck, and lastly the tech the doc managed to pull from her brain stem. The fact that she had survived at all was a miracle, in Geoffrey's eyes. Not only had she sustained heavy injury during the battle but the chip in her head had blown and shorted out her entire cerebral cortex. By all intents and purposes, she should be a vegetable.

It had been his unit that had discovered her among the dead, barely hanging onto life. The soldier's who'd been stationed there and had been stranded once their drop ship was knocked out by an EMP had adamantly argued bringing her on board. They said she was walking death and tried to kill them all. Captain Kurigawa was an honourable man, however and argued that she couldn't be more than a teenaged girl and she needed their help.

Seeing her awake after several months in a coma-like state, the fear that shone brightly in her eyes, like a wild animal cornered, only confirmed Geoff's fears and theories more than ever. This girl needed help.

After some brief questioning and attempts to speak to her, they realized that she couldn't understand them. The synthetic hardware attached to her brain had knocked out almost all cognitive abilities. She could walk, and put a man twice her size in a head lock, but she didn't know how to speak, or eat; read or write. What had those purple bellies done to her?

Despite her could be violent tendencies, Geoff couldn't help but feel for the young woman. If she was a day over 20, he was the rutting President of the Alliance. This girl was completely lost in the black. He just couldn't stop thinking about how she must be some father's little girl, more than likely kidnapped from her own home, turned into... Well he didn't rightly know what they'd tried to make her into. All he knew was that if it was him, if it was his daughter, he would hope the sunvabitch who found her would give her the same chance he was about to.

It only took one wave home to his wife to make up his mind. It was obvious the girl needed help, and after explaining the situation to his beloved Clara, there was no arguing with his wife's demand to bring her home.

Clara was a spiritual woman. Geoff knew that if anyone could help this young lady, it was Clara Marie Kurigawa. Even if the girl's past was lost forever, Clara would see to it that she could try to look to the future. Once the girl was on the mend enough to travel, he hopped a ship to Juniper with his young companion in tow.

Juniper City. Shiniest place south of the core. There he and his wife ran a small and simple restaurant and bar right off the fishing docks, called Jade Palace.

What the girl's right name was, they didn't know. It was Clara who had decided upon Sabrina, saying somehow it just seemed to fit. Sabrina found out shortly after she arrived that the Kurigawa's had a pension for taking in strays. Apart from Sabrina, there was another young man named Nathaniel that they had sort of 'adopted.' He didn't talk much. Clara seemed to think that he might have witnessed his family killed by Reavers and the event had struck him mute. Made sense. He couldn't have been more than twelve years old, and he'd been living with the Kurigawa's for over six years and he'd been homeless living in the streets before that. So if he really had witnessed a reaver attack, he must've been very young.

The one thing that was for certain though was that he was smart as all get out, and could fix dag near anything. He was responsible for most of the manual labour and maintenance around the Tavern, letting Clara focus on the restaurant and such.

After helping Sabrina settle in, and spreading the word that the 'niece' of his recently deceased brother had come to live with them, Geoffrey only stayed two weeks before returning to his unit.

Clara and Sabrina hit things off right away it seemed. Sabrina was interested in the work she did, the gardening, running the tavern. It was manual, it was easy. Everything else Clara tried to teach her was the hard part. The reading and writing and math. Sabrina picked it all up easy enough. She figured she must have known this stuff once upon a time before the war. It was probably like that saying Clara kept using, "Like riding a bicycle." Whatever that was supposed to mean. Apart from the gardening and helping in the tavern and brewery, Sabrina's only other hevay interest was in art. Clara had introduced her to coloring and drawing and Sabrina had just kind of gone wild with it. They found out shortly after that she was highly gifted with a kohl pencil or a paint brush.

It wasn't all that long before Sabrina was helping run the Palace; giving old Clara a much deserved break. Clara taught her to cook, to garden, how to do inventory and accounting. Days turned to weeks, then to months and years. Sabrina became a part of their pseudo-family to the point that it no longer seemed like a lie telling people she was. As Clara was getting up in years, running of the restaurant began to rely solely on Sabrina, which was a task she seemed to thrive in.

Sabrina seemed to always have that nagging instinct in the back of her head, though, that at times made her need to work out her frustrations in ways other than manual labor. This usually entailed looking in places like some seedy underground fighting or boxing ring. For the most part, however, Sabrina kept those urges to herself. The zen of hard labour and painting helped as well.

When Geoff died at the Battle of Serenity Valley, Clara was devastated and her health took a turn for the worst. She died only a few months later due to no foreseeable illness or disease. If anything, Sabrina could bet it was heartbreak. She knew such a thing could be devastating but the possibility of someone dying from it, that just didn't seem logical to her. Then again, her own pain at losing her foster-parents very nearly broke her own heart so maybe she could understand it a little.

To Sabrina's complete and utter surprise, Geoff and Clara had left Jade Palace, their land, and most of their possessions to Sabrina in their will, as well as looking after Nate.

Some of the extended members of their family were outraged. Tradition dictated the restaurant should have gone to the eldest child. Geoff and Clara had justified their decision by saying that Sabrina was the closest thing to a daughter they'd ever had and could ever wish for. Sabrina loved the Palace as much as they did and they knew they were leaving it and their recipes in capable hands.

That wouldn't be the end of it though. Geoff's relations made short work of squeezing Sabrina out and had even threatened her's and Nate's lives if they didn't leave. They even burned Clara and Sabrina's garden to the ground for good measure. So even though Jade Palace was the only home she'd ever known, Sabrina wouldn't risk her parent's tavern or her 'brother's' life by stubbornly keeping it. So she reluctantly signed over the deed, though she didn't do so without a price. What they hadn't expected was for Sabrina to sabotage the brewery and take all of the Kurigawa recipes with her, including the ones that detailed the brewing of the Kurigawa brand juniper beer and wine. Sabrina had long bartered her and Nate's passage on a passing ship before they found this out.

Their price for passage would only take them as far as a wayfaring space station. Therein, Brin and Nate had found a little niche to call homethat was owned by a local bar owner who let Sabrina pay for it by cooking, tending bar and serving 5-6 nights a week. Nate's skill with engines got him noticed by a the station's engineering who put him to work immediately. Brin's skills in the kitchen and behind the bar gave her notice by most of the bar's patrons who eventually started frequenting the place simply because of her cooking and her candor. Occasionally she even shared a bottle of Juniper Wine which she claimed she made herself.

The station had a small horticultural sector that Sabrina would be able to grow a juniper tree or two, the berries of which provided the main ingredient in her alcohol. She would probably never be able to brew the stuff in the quantities like she had before back on Juniper, but it had been enough to make a bottle or two every now and then which she 'shared' with some of her regulars once in a while.

It didn't take long for the stillness of space and the feeling of being trapped to wear on Sabrina. She was going quietly mad and left to her own devices that could be bad. It was never good when the more feral side of her personality started taking over. People could get hurt. Because of this she was urged to go looking for an avenue to release her tensions on... That was when she stumbled on the slums and a place the residents called The Cage. It was here she developed a pseudonym and made quite the hefty profit in underground fighting. The district was owned by some mafia like organization who paid the authorities to keep their officers out of their business, and blacked out surveillance.

Eventually, after a few years Sabrina managed to save up enough to buy out the owner of the old bar. They closed for a few months, revamped the interior, made some repairs and later re-christened it "The Jaded Palace" in honor of her once home.

Together, Nate and Brin had been maintaining and running Jaded Palace for over eight years until terrorists blew it up. Brin and Nate managed to make it to the pods and then Bridgeway entered the picture. The big wigs allowed Sabrina to carry over all of her contracts and insurance paid for the rebuild. This time when she was able to build a new Jaded Palace she retrofitted it to her exact specifications; the main changes she had in mind was the apartment on the second story and the brewery in the back. They held a grand re-opening when the Station was operational and she officially rolled out the Kurigawa Special after several years in retirement. The place has been booming ever since.

The new station had a massive hydroponics sector which permitted Sabrina to plant at least a dozen Juniper berry trees which would save her a great deal of money by harvesting locally instead of having to ship out for them all the time. She would probably still have to keep a supplier on retainer as surplus, but not as her main stock. That was very good news.

Sabrina's time on Bridgeway Station has been pleasant for the most part... With the regular nights of insomnia usually caused by violent nightmares she can never remember; only waking up twisted in her sheets and drenched in sweat. Throw in the random thoughts and tendencies for violence; unexpected and immensely confusing memory recalls and Sabrina would call it an interesting couple of years.

Other History:
Sabrina came from a family of standing and, though not a prodigy or genius, she was extremely talented in art and physical pursuits. She  had also never taken a sick day in her life. She was drafted into the Alliance's Academy during it's very first initial phases. After extensive physical conditioning and training, combined with a little torture and experimental supplements, a synthetic control chip was implanted in Sabrina's cerebral cortex which in essence gave the Alliance complete control of her actions.

Sabrina was one of their first ever successful experiments and was used in covert assassination attempts, undercover operations and in the war against the independents. It was during one particular battle against the Browncoats that an aspect the Alliance never considered would come into play, and help them reconsider their controlling techniques.

Fighting against the independents with a covert unit, Sabrina's group was ambushed and in the fray she had taken a small piece of shrapnel to the base of her skull. Her programming glitched out and for the first time in years she was in her own mind; terrified out of her wits in the middle of a bloody and horrific war. Desperate, terrified and confused she took off running, her chip fighting to regain control and lead her back into the battle to complete her objective.

The synthetic hardware in her brain eventually regained control of her motor functions and Brin couldn't help but watch in horror as she covertly snuck in behind enemy lines and started killing people. She felt a bullet blast through her left hip, screaming at the pain, only to get back up and continue her assault. Another bullet tore through her rib cage, and another through her right leg. After killing the one who'd shot her, she was thrown into hand to hand combat with a skilled soldier and ended up almost being gutted from navel to nose before she killed him.

Her body fell, bloodied and broken, but it was her mind that had sustained the most damage. Even the synthetic chip in her brain couldn't manage to urge her body to continue to fight; to take over the turret to her right and bring down the Independent drop ship that was converging on her location.

Browncoats hurried to make it to the drop ship to get to safety, and Sabrina's body, slowly but surely moved to stand. That was all she managed to do, however, before someone screamed, "E.M.P." which was followed by a blinding light, a massive surge of energy and pain that coursed through her entire mind and body... Then there was nothing.

Skills:
Sabrina's observational skills are very high. There is very little that escapes her notice and she is very good at reading situations and their outcomes.
Sabrina is highly gifted with words, and using them to her advantage. She has very high charisma and great negotiation skills.
Bladed weapons and throwing weapons. Sabrina is very gifted in knife fighting, and deathly accurate with throwing weapons.
Hand to hand combat/Martial arts/Mixed Martial arts. Most of this skill has been gleaned from sheer muscle memory from whatever she had been through when she was younger. Through her own training with hand to hand fighting she has improved and maintained this skill. However, over the years she has adapted at least a dozen different fighting techniques into her style and as such is extremely hard to predict in a fight. One might think they have her style pegged but then she'd go and switch it up to a completely different style altogether.
Intuition/Instinct. Sabrina has almost a sixth sense about some things and is never afraid to trust her gut. In fact, she considers it unwise to go against her instincts.
Sabrina is a highly gifted artist and painter. Apart from fighting, it is one of the only things that tends to calm her mind and keep her from going stir crazy.

Weaknesses:  Overprotectiveness. Sabrina will often put her own well-being and safety on the back burner if or when it comes to helping or saving someone she cared about.
Sabrina has anger management issues and a bad temper. She is more prone to want to punch someone who has offended or insulted her than listen to what they have to say.
Though Sabrina is very graceful and fluid in her movements and fighting style, if she's not absorbed in a fight or utterly concentrating on what she's doing she can be a bit of a klutz.
Apart from throwing knives, axes, etc., Sabrina is not the most skilled at ranged weaponry. That's why she prefers the shotgun. The pistol is mostly for sentimental reasons.
Sabrina is a a huge smoker and has difficulty breathing at times because of this.
Social Gatherings. Due to her upfront personality, Sabrina can be a real Social klutz at times. She lacks tact in most any social situation.
Drinking. Sabrina loves to drink, but she gets inebriated easily. I believe the term usually used is 'a cheap date.' She tends to be extremely klutzy and goofy when drunk. A bit of her more jovial personality can be seen at these times.
