David Maverick

Age:  43

Gender:  Male

Primary Occupation:  Pilot

Secondary Occupation:  Business/Operations

Requested Ship:  Brass Ferret

Equipment:  Standard-issue Alliance military handgun, always on his person. M16 rifle, well-cared for but almost never used. PDA/Comm Unit. One nice, tailored suit and pair of dress shoes. A pair of aviator sunglasses, always on him.

Appearance:  David is an attractive man. His glossy, dark brown hair varies in length depending on how long he has been in the black. He'll let it grow until he's planetside long enough to get it cut. At its shortest there's always enough length that a beautiful woman might be able to grab a fistful. At its longest it has been known to make it to his shoulders.

He has a wide smile that shows a set of perfect teeth. His eyes are bright and twinkling. His body is toned and muscled - he is clearly a man that works out regularly and consistently. He's getting on a bit in age so there's crow's feet and other lines wrinkling his face. At 5' 7", he's on the short side for a man.

For clothing, he tends to wear jeans or cargo-pants with a simple shirt. If the occasion calls for it, he looks great in a suit. And he almost always wears a pair of aviator sunglasses. If he's not wearing them, they're on him somewhere.

Face Claim:  Tom Cruise

Initial Personality:  Affable is the first word that describes David. He is a social chameleon; he finds a way to get along with any type or group of people he wants. It comes naturally to him - it's not something he puts effort into doing. Without thinking about it he mimics the demeanor and traits of people in a way that ingratiates himself with them. He seems just as comfortable as the life and soul of a party, swigging beers and making loud-mouthed jokes as he is sitting alone in a quiet corner reading a book.

When it comes to work, it's clear that David is all-business. There's never a question whether he's pulling his weight and he never shirks responsibility.

A small thing: his name is David - not Dave. He'll let you get away with calling him Dave once or maybe twice, but any more than that and you're going to piss him off. Not that he'll show it much - David is very even-tempered and can't even remember the last time he shouted at someone in anger.

Underlying Personality:  David is a naturally fun-loving, out-going guy. In his youth he lived a fast-paced life, jumping eagerly from thrill to thrill and never contemplating the consequences or the future. Now, he is beginning to face his increasing age and starting to think that there is more to life than living for the immediate pleasure. Deep down, he is starting to panic that he has squandered his youth on meaningless and trivial pursuits rather than setting up a solid future for himself.

There is a cold loneliness looming ahead of him and, because of that, great fear is lingering just beneath his surface.

Other History:  David never really knew his father. He has some vague memories from when he was very young but his father was not an active presence in his life.

David had three older sisters, a loving mother and a caring uncle to lead and guide him in his early life. It was a pretty uneventful childhood in the suburbs. Money was always tight but David never felt disadvantaged.

He joined the military for a lot of reasons: his mother would say he needed the discipline, his uncle would say he did it for the offer of an education, his sisters would say it was for the thrill of flying. David wouldn't really know what to say.

University was fun and David was popular. He was there on military scholarship which meant certain standards of behavior that other students were not held to, and David took seriously. He was proud to be Alliance Air Force and from the moment he signed up he lived the Air Force values. He struggled a lot with the academic side of university as well, so more time than he'd like to admit was spent studying.

It was all worth it once he graduated and got his pilot's license. It was in the sky he could really let loose. With a penchant for speed and thrilling heroics, David lived up to his last name of Maverick!

He was a hot-shot pilot and managed to get on the good side of all his commanding officers. He rose through the ranks consistently, finding time to party and enjoy life at the same time.

War came and went. From the cockpit of his fighter, it didn't seem so bad. Of course war is devastating but somehow up above it all it seemed more like a game than life or death. But of course, death always came. The squad mates David lost weigh heavily on his heart but you'd probably never know that.

After the war, David was promoted again and called upon to train new recruits. That got old pretty quickly, and when the opportunity for early retirement came with cuts to military spending, David decided to take it.

He found himself a commercial job with Fracture Field Industries and has been flying salvage ships since then.

Skills and Strengths:  Piloting. David is military trained by the Alliance and has had his pilot's license for over 20 years now. In his youth he was a hot-shot fighter pilot. He flew throughout the war on many successful missions. After the war he was a flight instructor. He has currently been piloting the Brass Ferret for five years.

Leadership. David is the born leader type. He is confident without being arrogant; he knows how to delegate; he counsels with his crew when necessary and knows when to put his foot down.

Business. When he left the military, David began thinking about future career options. He is currently finishing up an online MBA with Londinium University.

Mechanics. As a pilot, it's important to understand the mechanical side of flying, which David does. He has a degree in Aviation which included aerospace engineering and other mechanical-related components. He would never want to be the sole mechanic on a ship he runs but he certainly knows what's what in the engine room and could take care of general maintenance and repairs if necessary.

Firearms. David received the standard military training in shooting and has kept his skill at a competent level.

Basic First Aid. David received the emergency first aid training that was part of his basic training in the Air Force. He never needed it though. When he started working for Fracture Field Industries he decided to up-skill and got his EMT certification just before he got promoted to Captain. He never used that either, and has let it expire to boot. So, he knows what is supposed to be done in an emergency situation but he's never been the one to have to do it.

Martial Arts. This is a passion that David has slowly developed over the years. He received basic CQC training in the military to a competent level. When he switched to civilian life he took an interest in learning a variety of styles. At the moment he is particularly focused on tai chi and will start and end every day with some practices.

Weaknesses:  Computers. Okay, so, navigational systems and cockpit controls are one thing - basic Cortex use is entirely another. It's the awful stereotype of being old, which only makes it so much worse for David. Computers and technology - outside of what's needed to pilot a ship - are beyond him.

Getting old. He's not as fit as he used to be, and to make matters worse, he's not willing to admit that to himself yet. So he thinks he's just as fit and competent as he was at 20.

Academics. Despite the fact that David earned his BSc in Aviation and is putting himself through a distance-learning MBA, he is by no means academically inclined.

Lonely Heart. Through his twenties and thirties the life of a bachelor suited him well. He had no problem finding company when he really wanted it and on those rare occasions he longed for more, the feelings eventually passed. But now he's into his forties, that longing doesn't fade so easily. There's a picture he carries, of the "one that got away", but if he's entirely honest with himself, he's probably over-romanticizing what they had anyway.

Lastly, if anyone so much as utters the phrase "mid-life crisis", David will leave the room cursing their name - but... it's true that he's at a point in his life where he's looking at what he's accomplished and at what he might yet accomplish and neither view is particularly heartening. What has he done with his life? What is he doing with his life? These are the questions beginning to plague him.
