Finding Serenity

Finding Serenity is an original-character roleplay set in Joss Whedon's Firefly 'Verse. Events take place after the events of the Serenity movie.

The year is 2519.

Earth-That-Was is long gone. Humans found a new group of solar systems with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. The "Core" planets are civilised, high-tech and under Alliance control. The "Border" worlds are diverse and distinct. The "Rim" is the wild west of the 'verse and the "Black" is where our ships travel, hoping to avoid the perils of space: Alliance, pirates, and the monsters known as Reavers.

So here we are, on the "raggedy edge". This is where our characters live. There are those who stick by the Alliance Government, those who want to rise up against it, and those that just don't care either way as long as they can make a living. With every turn, every choice put forward and every decision made we are FINDING SERENITY

Jax was hard pressed on the look out for any glaring signs of his old ship. As always, Abigail the attentive one, first noticed they had company.

"Can we help you?" She stood her legs shoulder width distance apart her fingers drumming on the butt of her gun, almost asking him to make a move.

Jax spun around to see just what she had found and seeing Abigail had taken up a defensive stance he quickly interjected. "Oh hello there!" Jax offered as he stepped in front of Abigail. "Easy there" He whispered to her. "Maybe you can assist us....looking for an old transport.....grayish worn metal coloring with the name Wushu marked on the port side hull?" Jax put on his most friendly face.

(Changed due to screwing up other players plans)

For those who never called her home, she was a pretty mundane ship with a pretty mundane history. No war heroics. No glorious adventures. Just pick up the shipping crates. Deliver the shipping crates. Repeat ad nauseum.

But she'd provided a good home and income for many over the years. People were people aboard her. People had fallen in love aboard her more than once. Babies were conceived and even birthed on her decks. People fought against each other aboard her, much like she herself fought against gravity. People embraced each other aboard her much like her two prongs embraced her payload crates.

But circumstances now found her lifted by crane high above a United Reclamation salvage dump on Beylix being carried to a place where it would hopefully be well nestled before being found by those who saw her value.

"Uh...boss? Over."

"Go ahead, Chang. Have you moved that old Asteroid-09, yet? Over."

"Not yet, boss. Could you check the index again? Over."

"Why? My instructions were very clear. Put the ship where I told you and move on to the next one. Over."

"It's just that there's already a ship where you want me to put it. Over."

"Impossible. Over."

"I'm looking right at it, boss. Over."

"Impossible, Chang. If we'd already put a ship there, I would know about it. Over."

"Yeah, but somebody could have parked one there without authorization. Like hiding a needle in a haystack. Anyway, I'm telling you there's a ship right where you want me to drop this thing. Over."

"Alright, Chang. I'm checking the index now and I can verify that there is no ship at that location. We don't have time for this. You have your instructions. Over."

"(Sigh) You're the boss, boss. Over."

________

Dr. Trent Nguyen instinctively held up his hands when confronted by the imposing figure of Abigail Archer.

Quote
"Can we help you?"

Yes, my name is Dr. Trent Nguyen. You seem to know what you're looking for in a ship, which means you know more than I do including, hopefully, how to fly one. I'm hoping to either buy a ship of my own or hire one for a matter of life or death...is what he WOULD have said had he not been trying to keep his bowels from evacuating. Instead, it came out as a "Merp!"

Quote
"Oh hello there!" Jax offered as he stepped in front of Abigail. "Easy there" He whispered to her. "Maybe you can assist us....looking for an old transport.....grayish worn metal coloring with the name Wushu marked on the port side hull?" Jax put on his most friendly face.

The kinder approach had the desired effect on the doctor. "Umm...actually, yes! Isn't that it right over there?

He pointed to an old mid-size transport matching Jax's description exactly.

For those who called her home, Wushu was far from mundane. She'd seen her share of action and adventure...and survived. She'd been home to both the wealthy and the poor. The (comparatively) honest...and the villainous. Dreams had been born aboard her and dreams had been crushed...

...Crushed just like Wushu herself as a salvage yard worker named Chang put his finger on the release switch to send the Asteroid-09 plummeting towards her to make her an interstellar pancake topped with-
_______
"CHANG! WAIT!"

Gah! "What is it, boss! Over."

"I got a note here. Yeah. Turns out there IS a ship already there. Huh. You didn't put that Asteroid-09 on top of it, did you? That really would have screwed up someone's plans. Over."

"Seriously! Nope, I didn't crush it or anything. Was just about to, though. Over."
______

Instead, the Asteroid-09 was safely eased down next to the Wushu, causing no additional harm to either ship, but blocking the Wushu from Nguyen's, Abigail's, and Jax's view.

"Oop!" said the doctor. "I mean it's right behind that other ship there."

”…Be cool when you do. Just mark what he looks like and where he goes."

Freya’s brows furrowed from her spot beneath the mule and she wiggled around in an attempt to get out. Once she was free, the girl cleared her throat and crossed her arms over her chest, “Cool,” she murmured, trying to imagine what that looked like. Awkwardly uncrossing her arms, she then set one hand behind her, wanting to put it on the mule and lean back nonchalantly. Of course, she missed and slipped a little, which she tried to turn into some ‘I was actually trying to run a hand through my hair and totally meant to do that’ sort of motion. In the end, she just ended up looking far more out of place and uncomfortable than any semblance of ‘cool.’ Not to mention she was covered in the dirt, grime, and residual oil from being underneath the mule.

"Easy there"

Abigail relaxed slightly, letting out a huff of disapproval. It was in her not so modest opinion that aggression in the face of a stranger who was following them without warning, was warranted. However, Jax did have a way of getting things done, with that charm of his.  So she let him do what he needed to.

She looked off to where the man had pointed and her eyes widened as she saw the ship ready to be destroyed. However no sooner than the thought was in her mind, the ship was now safe, and within reach.  She couldn't believe he was actually able to get them out of this go se position. While farming had been an interesting idea to entertain, it was never something she was jumping for joy over.

Abigail looked over at Jax and gestured,

"After you, Captain."

Jax watched in astonishment as he caught a quick glimpse of Wushu just before it was blocked by another old transport dropped next to her. His hairbrained scheme to get a ride to Beylix and actually find his old ship had worked....so far. Jax turned to Abigail as he ran his hand over his head, his grin the widest she'd ever seen. "There she is!" He said confidently like he never had a worry in the 'Verse.

Abigail looked over at Jax and gestured,

"After you, Captain."

Jax without hesitiation wrapped his arms around Abigail and moved to give her a big kiss! He had been wanting too since he first saw her in the saloon and now seemed like the perfect moment.

--

"Oop!" said the doctor. "I mean it's right behind that other ship there."

--

"It sure is stranger, thanks so much." Jax offered as his mind started to work out their next move. Turning back to the man...."Looking for a job?"

Abigail could try to act surprised, but she wasn't. It was almost natural the way he kissed her.  A small smile reserved only for those closest to her crept across her lips.  She looked back towards the ship and let out a deep sigh.

"Well we better find someone to help us run this thing....and a way to pay them, I'm sure there's a casino near by that could use a good cleaning out."

Abigail turned back to the doctor "So are you looking for a way off this rock? Or do you run this place?"

The stranger seemed to be at a loss for words at the moment so Jax moved on to answer Abigail's question. Jax spun around slowly as if trying to catch his bearings. "Well there is Trash Town, maybe about ten klicks from here if I remember correctly, been there with Quaid." The last time Jax had seen Quaid was at a bar there, Quaid being his Nemisis, the one who stole Wushu right out from under him. "There's a watering hole there for traders and smugglers...goes by the moniker 'The Dump'." Jax thought for a moment... "Could be we find some crew there, probably not much coin though." Jax smiled. "Well guess we should call this in to Eef."[Ephraim “F-Word” Fiwiescaya]

Dr. Nguyen was a bit taken back by the sudden intimate moment between Jax and Abigail. The offer of a job, however, needed addressing before they completely dismissed him and he missed his opportunity.

"Me, a job? No, quite the opposite. I'm more in a hiring state of mind at the moment. I've patients that need to be transported off world. Not in a huge rush, but it must be done. The issue being that their ailment requires that they be kept in a very specific and very controlled atmosphere which, I've come to find, not many ships can guarantee. I've just about given up looking for a transport for hire and was looking to buy my own. I don't suppose your ship there...Wushu, I believe it was, could transport 12 patients in a medically induced coma in a temperature between 37 and 38 degrees Celcius with humidity at a constant 74 percent while still maintaining adequate life support? There are other details, of course, but if you cannot guarantee these details, it would be a waste of your time to discuss the rest."

Freya's attempt at a cool and calm composure was put to the test as the man and his "dog" came around the corner. The man kicked the woman he had on a leash in the butt when she didn't move fast enough, and sharply jerked the leash when he felt she was getting too far ahead. He paid no mind to Freya and Iona.

"Go on, now! Hurry up and do your business so I can get back to the card game!"

The man led the woman off in the same direction as the ship that Izak was rummaging through and in short order Izak was able to see them through the viewport of the cockpit.

F-Word grabbed the salvage claim tags from the dispenser a bit more violently than he normally would have, his usually pleasant and rosy attitude ruined by the sight of a human being treated like a dog.

"Hell, you shouldn't treat a real dog that way, neither," muttered F-Word to himself as he made his way back to where he left Freya and Iona, keeping enough distance from the man so A) Wouldn't raise suspicion and B)Wouldn't have to look at the sight again.

Izak's voice came over the comm

Quote
“Found some good navigation equipment in the freighter I’m in. It’s all after-market though…and some of it looks like military, probably not surplus. You may want to send someone over to look at the engines F-Word.”

F-Word was grateful for the distraction. "Sounds good, Izak. I trust your judgment on the nav equipment. Gather it up and anything else you deem worthy. I'll be over to look at the engines. Freya, I need your stealthy, wispy self to keep an eye on that...other thing heading your way. Iona, cover her. We can't let this stand...and we won't. But let's do it smart, and not lose sight of why we're here. Speaking of which, Jax and Abigail. Any luck finding a suitable ship?"

Before Jax could hit his comm and contact Eef the stranger spoke up.

"Me, a job? No, quite the opposite. I'm more in a hiring state of mind at the moment. I've patients that need to be transported off world. Not in a huge rush, but it must be done. Jax was caught by surprise by the outburst, but intrigued at the prospect. Could it be fate that they find the ship and a paying customer all at the same time? Jax smiled and scratched at the stubble on his chin. "You speak like you are a physician or am I totally off on my hunch?" Jax continued not pausing for an answer. "I don't see why we couldn't handle your requirements, just need to check out the ship first. If all checks out the next question is how much is it worth to you?"

Before the Doctor could answer Jax comm squawked...."Jax and Abigail. Any luck finding a suitable ship?"

Jax raised a hand up to the stranger..."Hold on one minute." Then reached for the comm. "Hey Eef...still searching this far side past those towers...nothing but Luh Suh so far. We're going to continue on about another two or three rows and then swing back your way....over."

Abigail raised her eyebrows at Jax.  "So we're not telling him then?" Not that she had a problem with lying to Fword, she preferred keeping him in the dark.  Captain or not, he wasn't her cup of tea, she couldn't see herself surviving on the floating farm.

Though Dr. Nguyen couldn't hear F-Word's half of the conversation, with what he'd just seen vis-a-vis the finding of a ship and with what he'd just heard from Jax and Abigail, the right conclusion was easy to come to. These two were planning to take this ship, Wushu, and leave their current crew in the lurch. In any case, they certainly weren't being truthful with their crew. So it stood to reason they wouldn't be truthful with other people they did business with.

"Actually...never mind. I think I'll take my business elsewhere. Good luck." And he turned to leave.

"Not yet at least, we need...." Jax got out a few words in response before the Doctor broke in.

"Actually...never mind. I think I'll take my business elsewhere. Good luck." And he turned to leave.

Jax watched as the stranger swiftly changed his mind and turned to leave. For a quick moment he thought to stop him... what if he reports them to whatever security was around. Rationally there was no time for that and what would they do with a hostage for that matter. Jax looked to Abigail hoping she wouldn't shoot the poor fellow in the back.

Freya, I need your stealthy, wispy self to keep an eye on that...other thing heading your way.

Freya’s eyes widened a little at the order, but she shrugged soon after. Her confused little pout stretched into a mischievous grin and the girl winked awkwardly up at Iona. The lady looked like a shadow herself, so she didn’t doubt that Iona would be able to keep up with her with some semblance of stealth. Turning away, the dirtied teen stopped and looked back at the mule before clearing her throat and murmuring into her own com, “Hey, can you tag this mule on your way over? I don’t want someone to take it…” she asked.

Trusting Tomato Man to keep her precious mule baby safe (or to at least claim it), the stowaway shoved herself between two boxes of who knows what and started making her way after the man and his ‘dog’. She crawled between containers, through little spaces made by metal leaning against one another, all the while keeping her head turned to observe the man and his mutt. As she moved, she was surprisingly silent, hands and feet (and occasionally knees) expertly leaning against or touching things in a way that kept them from tipping, tilting, or crashing down to the ground. It seemed she could be some kind of put-together if she really tried.

As luck would have it, the man was heading closer to where Izak and the engines he wanted looked into were, which was convenient. Two birds, and all that.

The crate opened and for the first time in a long time the sharp sting of the sun invaded her retinas, it was a painful relief from the cramped confines she’d been trapped in.  A large man grabbed her by the collar and yanked her roughly out.  Hitching a rope to the collar he pulled stiffly causing her to hit face first into the dirt.  He laughed at her and she grimaced in return, jumping to her feet and charging at him she jumped on him, biting into his neck and feeling the skin break in her teeth.  She was pulled off him by another man and ate a few kicks to the ribs.  They began to drag her down the street, looking around she saw people more people than she’d ever seen before and strange structures.  It was overwhelming.
For good measure the man holding the leash tugged causing her to fall forward, her hands bracing her from falling right on her face again.

” Fine day to walk the dog, ain't it?"

Her captor spoke to a random bystander as he howled, she didn’t know what he said but she felt the anger growing in herself.  She began looking for options on how she could escape, a little bit ahead she saw a pillar and decided that was her option.  As they approached she slowly walked faster until she was ahead of the man.  He was watching her closely but thankfully didn’t tug her back.  As they passed the pillar she made a hard left, wrapping her leash around the post causing the man to stumble into it face first.  She wasted little time running a circle around it wrapping the leash around the man’s neck temporarily pinning him.  She unclipped the leash and began a hard sprint down a side street.  She heard hollering behind her but didn’t look back.  Still she didn’t know where she was running to and needed a vantage point.

Finding some horizontal bars attached to a crate not unlike what she’d been kept in she scurried up then hopped across several other crates before grabbing onto the ledge of a window, pulling herself up the wall of a building until she reached the roof.  She looked around at the world below but did not see the men.
There were so many people, she was feeling more claustrophobic than when she was in that crate and needed to get away from this strange place.  She saw one of the strange structures take off in the distance and realized if she could get into one of them she could escape.

She ran across rooftops, leaping over gaps and scampering over ledges until she reached where these ships were.  She saw one with its mouth opened and took off towards it.  Slowing as she approached she looked around for the men but they were nowhere to be seen.  She slipped through the crowd and reached the maw of whatever it was.  Nobody seemed to be watching the entrance so she slipped in and looked for a place to hide.  Not her favourite solution but an open crate had enough objects in it she could hide behind.  Scared and disoriented she wasn’t thinking about her next step, she was just glad to be free.  Settling into the back of the crate she began pulling at her collar trying to remove it but to no avail.  Giving up she resigned herself to merely resting, her body aching from the most recent abuse.

Abigail eyed the doctor as he was leaving. The same though most likely crossing her mind as well as Jax's, was he going to blow their plan wide open.  F-Word would have reason to be upset, but he knew this wasn't their cup of tea to begin with. Not to mention, she was a criminal, and there's only honor among thieves, not farmers.

Finding themselves alone again surrounded by the collection of ghost ships and salvage clutter, Jax and Abigail made tracks for Wushu. "C'mon let's take a peek." A closer look showed that the outer hull looked fine, a bit dusty with some paint scraped off here and there. Jax made his way around the transport surprised to find the cargo ramp partially open. A try of the ramp controls proved fruitless as it stayed unmoved in it's half open position. "Well I guess we can climb up and squeeze through." It was hard for Jax to conceal his excitement. He flashed Abigail a wide grin...."Alright follow me then."
